The Power of Positive Thinking: A Lesson from My 10-Year-Old

  1. A Small but Powerful Habit
  2. Why Positive Self-Talk Matters
  3. A Simple but Powerful Practice
  4. Let’s Lift Each Other Up

It’s no secret—I’m a firm believer in the power of positive thinking. Life can be challenging, and we all face ups and downs, but I try to approach it with a glass-half-full perspective. Personal self-talk is everything. It shapes our mindset and, ultimately, how we navigate the world. After all, we are often our own harshest critics, and I’ll admit, I’m guilty of that myself!

But over the past few months, I’ve been reminded of just how important it is to be kind to ourselves. And the best part? That reminder came from someone I never expected—my 10-year-old daughter.

A Small but Powerful Habit

One day, I walked into the bathroom and found little notes on the mirror—handwritten messages from my daughter to herself. They were simple, sweet reminders like, “You are the best!” and “Think positive.” At just 10 years old, she’s already learning the power of self-affirmation and positive self-talk. It’s such a beautiful thing to witness as a parent.

I also write notes and quotes on my bathroom mirror as a daily reminder for myself. We really need to remember that our kids listen and watch everything we do. They absorb our words, our actions, and our attitudes—whether we realize it or not. They will mimic the best and worst of us, so it’s important to consciously model positive habits, especially when it comes to how we treat ourselves.

None of us are perfect, but if we can instill some of our best qualities—like kindness, positivity, and self-love—then we’re doing a great job. I couldn’t help but smile when I saw her notes. In a world where so many of us struggle with self-doubt and negative thoughts, she’s already teaching herself to lift herself up. It made me realize how crucial it is to practice what I preach when it comes to self-love and positive thinking.

Why Positive Self-Talk Matters

The way we talk to ourselves matters more than we often realize. It affects our confidence, our mindset, and our overall well-being. If we constantly criticize ourselves or focus on what we can’t do, it can hold us back from reaching our full potential. On the other hand, practicing kindness and compassion in our self-talk encourages growth, resilience, and a sense of peace.

A book that really resonated with me in this regard is The Untethered Soul by Michael A. Singer. In it, the author explores the importance of quieting the inner critic and learning to observe our thoughts without becoming attached to them. This practice can help us detach from negative self-talk and instead embrace a more loving and mindful way of speaking to ourselves. It’s a great read for anyone looking to improve their self-awareness and build a more positive relationship with themselves. You can find more about it in My Bookshelf.

My daughter’s notes are a reminder for us all. No matter our age, we can all benefit from lifting ourselves up with encouraging words. It’s not about ignoring our struggles, but about acknowledging them and still choosing to be kind and patient with ourselves as we navigate them.

A Simple but Powerful Practice

If you’re looking to build more positivity into your daily routine, try this simple practice:
👉 Write a note to yourself. It can be a message of encouragement, a reminder of how far you’ve come, or just a little affirmation to get you through the day.
👉 Stick it on your mirror, your computer, or somewhere you’ll see it often.
It may seem small, but those little words can have a big impact on how you feel and approach the day.

And if you have kids, encourage them to do the same. It’s never too early to start teaching them the value of self-love and positive thinking!

Let’s Lift Each Other Up

At the end of the day, we all need a reminder that we’re worthy of love, kindness, and success. It’s easy to forget that we deserve to be our own biggest cheerleaders. But if a 10-year-old can start this habit early, then surely we can all benefit from it as well.

So, go ahead—write that note to yourself today. And let’s continue to spread kindness, not just to others, but to ourselves too. 💕
